One of the biggest drivers of Sustainability in the EU is their flagship GreenComp. It is the European Sustainability Competence Framework developed by the European Commission to help learners build knowledge, skills, and attitudes for sustainable living.

Wouldn’t it be great to read and understand these competences in relation to the 169 Sustainable Development Goal Targets, well now you can, and includes an Education Snapshot with classroom and field activities with guidance to thinking, action and reflection.

About this tool. The GreenComp Pulse is a plain-English guide to the EU sustainability competence framework, for use across the 169to1 editions. The competence names, descriptors, examples and statements are rewritten in plain British English from GreenComp: The European sustainability competence framework (Bianchi, G., Pisiotis, U., Cabrera Giraldez, M.; edited by Bacigalupo, M. and Punie, Y.; JRC, Publications Office of the European Union, 2022), reused under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence.

GreenComp holds all 12 competences as equally important, and learners need not reach the same level across all of them. The Core focus and Build alongside emphasis shown for each audience is 169to1's own editorial layer to help each edition prioritise, and is not part of GreenComp. The framework is a reference, not a syllabus, and is meant to be adapted to the learner and the setting.

The SDGs view maps the 12 competences to the 169 SDG targets. The lead and supporting competences, and the reasons given, are 169to1's editorial interpretation for teaching and action planning. They are not part of GreenComp, which does not assign competences to targets, and they are not an official EU or UN crosswalk. Target wording and starter actions are 169to1's plain-English versions from the SDG Traffic Light Toolkit. The education snapshots, including learning questions, activities and evidence of learning, are 169to1 teaching examples for teachers to adapt, and do not reproduce official UN target wording.
