The Competences Pulse

GreenComp, EntreComp, DigComp and LifeComp In One Place

Connect With All The Comps

The Competences Pulse brings four European competence frameworks together in one place: GreenComp for sustainability, EntreComp for entrepreneurship, DigComp 3.0 for digital competence and LifeComp for personal, social and learning to learn competence. All four are published by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre. The tool rewrites their 57 competences in plain British English and sets out the full framework statements behind each one. Each competence also has an “I can” statement, a task for learners and a classroom activity for four age bands, from ages 5 to 8 up to ages 14 to 16.

The SDGs feature links each competence to the 169 targets of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Every target has an education snapshot covering why it matters, a learning question, the competences it builds across all four frameworks, a classroom activity and ways to show evidence of learning. Teachers can add progression sheets, framework overviews and snapshots to a print pack and print them as A4 sheets. None of the four frameworks sets levels by age or links its competences to SDG targets, so the age-band statements and the SDG mapping are 169to1’s teaching suggestions, built on the official descriptors for teachers to test and adapt.

About this tool. The Competences Pulse is a plain-English guide to four competence frameworks from the European Commission's Joint Research Centre. The competence names, descriptors and statements are rewritten in plain British English from: GreenComp: The European sustainability competence framework (Bianchi, Pisiotis and Cabrera, 2022, CC BY 4.0); EntreComp: The Entrepreneurship Competence Framework (Bacigalupo, Kampylis, Punie and Van den Brande, 2016, reproduction authorised with acknowledgement); DigComp 3.0: European Digital Competence Framework, Fifth Edition (Cosgrove and Cachia, 2025, CC BY 4.0); and LifeComp: The European Framework for Personal, Social and Learning to Learn Key Competence (Sala, Punie, Garkov and Cabrera, 2020, CC BY 4.0).

Each framework holds its competences as equally important and is meant to be adapted to the learner and the setting. None of the four sets levels by age, so the "I can" statements for ages 5 to 8, 9 to 10, 11 to 13 and 14 to 16 are 169to1's teaching progression, built on the official descriptors.

The SDGs tab links each framework's competences to the 169 SDG targets. These links and the reasons given are 169to1's editorial interpretation for teaching and action planning. They are not part of any of the four frameworks and are not an official EU or UN crosswalk. Target wording is a plain summary, not official UN text.
